Trotz wesentlicher Verbesserungen bei LGBTQ-Rechten in aller Welt sind die Fortschritte in Asien nach Wangs Auffassung gemischt. Die Legalisierung der gleichgeschlechtlichen Ehe in Taiwan im Mai 2019 sei in dieser Hinsicht eine bahnbrechende Entwicklung gewesen, so Wang.
Indem queere Geschichtenerzähler aus Asien einem globalen Publikum vorgestellt werden, bietet das Filmfest eine Gelegenheit, über die Hindernisse nachzudenken, mit denen heute Millionen von Menschen immer noch zu kämpfen haben, während die unterschiedlichen Kulturen, das Kulturerbe und die Identitäten von Gemeinschaften, die zu häufig von der Mainstream-Diskussion ausgeschlossen sind, gefeiert werden, ergänzte Wang.
